I had coffee with a technology executive whose done a lot of work leading large scale professional services teams. Most of his assignments have been with growth stage companies who have hit critical mass during his tenure.

He’s been EVP level once and VP level twice, he says he’s not ready to be a CEO.  People tell him all the time, “you have to be a CEO”, he’s just not there.

It got me thinking.

I can’t tell you how many times in my career I’ve interviewed candidates who aspire to be CEO’s of growing companies. They either want to found a company and lead it, or stand out and get promoted. They share romantic notions about leadership, vision, being the person who carves out a companies destiny.
