“Never Say Never” was coined by Charles Dickens in his 1837 Pickwick Papers.
Gloria Swanson lived by the phrase and re-released it to Western main stream in 1899, when she said:
“Never say never, for if you live long enough, chances are you will not be
able to abide by its restrictions. Never is a long, undependable time, and
life is too full of rich possibilities to have restrictions placed upon
it.”
Over a hundred years later, in 2011 Justin Bieber hinged movie success and released hit song, Never Say Never:
“I will never say never! (I will fight)
I will fight till forever! (make it right)
Whenever you knock me down
I will not stay on the ground

Never Say Never!!! O.K.! I thought, O.K!!
The same circumstances come to us over and over again for one reason, so we can handle them differently. They don’t come back so we can walk away; they come back so we can face them.
Having worked with executives and freelance consultants for a lot of my career, the one thing that puts leaders on the map is problem solving. The ability to look at recurrences as unique circumstances. The confidence to pull from previous experiences without repetition. Call it innovation, evolution, creativity what you will.
If I take anything away from my jog and this phrase that has inspired poetry, song and reflection, it would be this.
Never means Not Ever, which is impossible in fluid reality. In a world where everything around us is constantly changing you’re really better off “Never Saying Never” and having the faith to face familiar situations as though they were new.
Take that to where you live, work and play. See where it gets you.
