Start Ups and Clever Ideas – Often The Result of Cutting Ties

In one of my early Blogs I talked about how the recession was going to bring about a new wave of start ups; I also indicated that with the increased volumes of people claiming unemployed status, that we’d see a trend of SELF employed stats on the rise and new ventures as a result.

Since that Blog I have moved my career in a new direction and have had myriad conversations with senior level executives……

Here is what I have discovered:

UNEMPLOYMENT AND THE DISSOLUTION OF BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS LEADS TO NEW VENTURES:

-Close to a dozen of my candidates and clients have used closed businesses and personal lay-offs as opportunities to hang shingles as CEOs of their own consulting firms; others have gotten together with people in their “unemployed networks” to launch new businesses that leverage their past experiences and business networks. You may thinking, “but funding is scarce!”, it’s not – VC’s and Angel investors are looking for avenues to rebound and revitalize what was lost when the markets hit rock bottom.-see http://startupnorth.ca
-The ideas I have seen are for the most part, polar opposites of the cultures these people came from. They have responsive and nimble value propositions that adapt to clients readily, they have taken social networking to a higher level, and they have developed team building practices that have “non-toxic” written all over them.

PEOPLES’ RESUMES AND DIGITAL FOOTPRINTS HAVE EVOLVED:

-Gone are the days of 3rd person resumes, people aren’t afraid to say “I” in their resume;
-Resumes are now more conversational; sometimes people will list why they left, and why they joined;
-Social Networking has enabled candidates to promote each other, and allowed introductions to be made with ease and grace;
-Talent acquisition and new venture opportunities can be documented and showcased across multiple internet channels with style at a low cost- check out sprouter.com and virtualcv.com and never forget my personal favorite, LinkedIn.com

SEVERANCES, CREDIT LINES AND SAVINGS HAVE BEEN APPLIED TOWARDS INCREASED EDUCATION AND ENHANCED CERTIFICATIONS:

-One of my candidates who ran the professional services division of one of the worlds top technology vendors finally wound down enough to get his ITIL and PMP certifications. Upon receiving these, he was recruited to join yet another Global player in the security space. ( I should add, he developed a dynamic LinkedIn page and a good twitter following)

GREEN I.T., SUSTAINABLE ENERGY, ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCACY, NOT-FOR-PROFIT AND HEALTHCARE HAVE BEEN THE LARGEST BENEFACTORS OF TALENT LEAVING THE TECHNOLOGY AND MAUNFACTURING MARKETS:

– The dot com boom brought us innovation in emerging tech sector; the recession has produced a flood of technology and manufacturing workers who have sought out new ventures in Greener, Healthier areas. By applying their evolved skills and networks towards enhancing products and services in these realms; we know all things green and healthy will be a part of our next economical BOOM. Check out Al Gore….

PEOPLE ARE PRESENTING THEM SELVES IN A TRUER LIGHT:

-After being beaten up a few times, candidates, prospective partners and employers see their limitations and are not afraid to pull the skeletons out of the closet for examination early in the on boarding cycle. We will see more personality indexers and profilers being brought to the table as major hiring decision are made. If the hiring entity doesn’t do it, candidates will and come to interviews with their results and maybe ask their prospective employers to reciprocate.

AS A WHOLE, PEOPLE ARE STEPPING OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONES, THINKING OUT OF THE BOX AND GETTING CREATIVE BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE

-This is the key to defining what the recession has brought us. By pushing us to reach out side of our comfort zones, we are forced as a society to get creative, this leads to innovation and sows the seeds for new things to come.
