Your Resume Header? Profile, Summary or Objective

After the dot com boom a fellow recruiter said to me, ” I hate it when people have an objective on their resume, clients don’t care what candidates want, they care what they can offer.”

That resonated with me , after the welcome wagon of opportunity we all faced during the dot com boom. As candidates, we have had to become more focused on what employers want.

I am convinced that heading your resume with a profile, a 5 second elevator pitch of who you are and what distinguishes you as a professional is the way to go.

When reading documents, after 5 bullet points people lose attention. Make sure your profile is short, to the point and clear….no more than 3-4 sentences.

Use action words like: streamline, build, develop,exceed,optimize…..bold terms like: track record, results driven, award winning……

Think of your profile as your personal mission statement, a testimonial of who you are in your profession or vocation.

I am the founder of i-identify inc., a Toronto-based recruiting company, founded in 2013. My research uncovers full-time, interim and contract professionals who are leaders in their respective fields. My early work was focused on the emerging tech - sector, and later expanded into retail and consumer packaged goods technologies. In the past five to six years I have broadened my expertise to include Canada's public and not-for-profit sectors, working on assignments as far north as Iqaluit, uncovering talent as senior as Deputy Ministers, Commissioners and executives at the C level. I've become a search generalist who specializes in identifying great talent.
