The Business and Buddha isn’t an easy read…but it is a good read.
I promised myself I would read it after a blog about my 11 year old’s grade 6 graduation.
“Buddah Meet Margaret Mead.”
The author, Lloyd Field PHD, talks about the need for benevolence in how we run our businesses. Field’s assures his readers that if 40% of profits go back to good causes; in the long run, business and surrounding communities will flourish.
The key point for me was that if businesses were run with a greater sense of symbiosis with their employees, communities and customers – they would not have to focus as aggressively as is common, to enforce structure. They would evolve holistically as well as dynamically. With symbiotic relations and responses; apparently improvements are made to the bottom line, for employees and the world at large.

He says that interconnectivity is essential to become conscious of, especially for a businesses’ long term survival. Fields says self renewal as an inherent trait of an organization run with symbiosis in mind.
Talk about natural economics.
All this because of my daughter’s grad ceremony and her teacher’s speech about her class donating their business day earnings towards a water purification system for a Srilankan village school ….Ironically Field’s talks about “The Sarvodaya Movement” in Srilanka. He outlines in detail how Sarvodayan villages experience a “village awakening” and are able to live in comfort by following 10 basic Buddhist principals.
Despite very low incomes, they are spiritually balanced, healthy, they eat and sleep in comfort and are able to go to school. With a combined focus of volunteerism, ethical business practices and an overall commitment to one another’s well being they are able to flourish with very little.
Well, speaking of balance……..I better log off…….my 3 year old has chicken pox and isn’t happy about it …a hug from mom and a dose of calamine is in order.
