It’s been a great weekend…..with birthday parties galore
We hit our neighbour’s yard at 11pm, once the kids were in bed. It was once doomed to dirt by a rare old oaktree’s shade. This spot is now a celebrated sunless space with enhancements of fern, Ontario wild flowers…evergreen saplings and shrubs…it’s now a magical oasis, small, terraced …it’s barely 20×20. The mutileveled space feels like a forrest. To top it off, the host and his guitar band hung out under the 200 yr old oak tree and sang the blues..did I hear a loon call?
(too bad we had to leave, could have popped a tent)……….
Shift gears to Sunday…..I hit the Annex at 1pm and, voila another magical spot..dare I say astro turf??
Weeping red maples, hot pink geraniums and kids, kids, kids, rolling around with a portugeuse water dog, and all manner of toys on the grass….you gotta take your shoes off for this……….turns out you can wash it, dog pee dosen’t ruin it and it saves water…..my next google search will take me to the big if…..”do they make astro turf from recycled, environmentally friendly stuff?’….
if they do , OMG thats my first million, or yours…..its one of those , “you gotta feel it to believe it” scenarios….
I laughed at first..had to think of Peter Lynch, twin peaks and the ear drain in his rendition of suburbia………apparently when it rains, there’s no mud and the trees and flowers grow just fine………..it creates this cushy comfort factor…that on principal, you want to sneer your nose at….
Every one’s out door space… how ever you manufacture it, can truly/really be a bit of paradise…..(I remember roof tops and fire exits with chili lites in my 20s)
It just takes some good intent and a few friends to make it happen…………and I was truly blessed to be transported to bliss by two backyards this weekend.
From pine needles and oak leaves to astro turf and geraniums…….whats next?
Good nite all
